The Roman saddle
See the pictures of a Roman saddle at the Limes museum at Aalen in southern Germany. I have been fascinated with the Roman saddle since I saw the experiments carried out by Marcus Junkelmann in the 1990`s. I read every article about early saddles I could find and speculated a lot about how to make one. Last year I got started but I am only half done. I do not know if my horses are looking forward to the experiment. I saw several reconstructions in Germany and England at different museums. Unfortunately there is no information about how the saddle is constructed. The English group Comitatus is using a reconstruction for their shows and you can actually buy one made by their saddlery.
